Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement (LSCE)

The LSCE (Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement) is a joint laboratory of CEA, CNRS and UVSQ in Gif sur Yvette, France. It is part of the IPSL. It has extensive experience in the sciences of biogeochemical cycles as well as climate sciences, including instrumental and modelling approaches. LSCE leads the European ICOS greenhouse gases monitoring Research Infrastructure preparatory phase FP7 project. It is also coordinating the CarboEurope FP6 research project. LSCE is the current coordinator of GDRE YAK-AEROSIB (2003-2010). As such, LSCE was involved in all phases of the project, including the development and testing of instruments (especially CO2), funding and organizing the campaigns with IAO, processing and analysing the data, and ensuring the outreach of the project and dissemination of scientific results.

Zuev Institute of Atmospheric Optics (IAO)

The Zuev Institute of Atmospheric Optics of the Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences (IAO-SB-RAS) performs basic research in the field of atmospheric optics, and develop new instruments, software and databases for this research. IAO has unique monitoring stations (Siberian lidar station, TOR station, aerosol station) for long-term systematic monitoring of the atmosphere and regularly organizes field missions for atmospheric measurements in different regions of Russia and the world. IAO operates the Antonov-30 “Optik-E” airborne platform used in YAK-AEROSIB. IAO SB RAS has carried out sounding from Novosibirsk up to Ural to investigate the role of the Ural mountain range in the eastward transport of pollutants towards Siberia. In YAK-AEROSIB, IAO will continue to operate Optik-E for campaigns, will operate its aerosol instrumental package, will install and validate its CH4 instrument, and will participate to data analysis, focusing on export of European pollution across Siberia.

Laboratoire d’Aérologie (LA)

The Laboratoire d’Aérologie (LA) is a Unité Mixte de Recherche (UMR 5560) of the University Paul Sabatier (UPS – Toulouse) and of CNRS, and is part of the Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées. LA specializes in the study of physical, chemical and dynamical processes that control the meso-scale evolution of the troposphere. UPS-LA is a major partner of IAGOS-ERI EU FP7 project for using commercial Airbus aircraft for in-situ monitoring the atmospheric composition on a global scale (following of Mozaic programme). IAGOS-ERI has a strong collaboration with ICOS. UPS-LA is also involved on satellite validation using Mozaic data (Mopitt, IASI, Sciamachy, MAGEAQ …). UPS-LA is a main partner from the beginning of the GDRE YAK-AEROSIB. Its contribution is to provide and operate the O3/CO airborne instruments, to process and validate the data, and to participate to the scientific publications in close collaboration with LSCE.

Laboratoire Atmospheres, Milieux, Observations Spatiales (LATMOS)

The LATMOS (Laboratoire Atmospheres, Milieux, Observations Spatiales) has a long experience in the study of dynamical, radiative and chemical processes in the Earth and planetary atmospheres using combined experimental and theoretical approaches, including various observation systems. The LATMOS has considerable expertise in the field of atmospheric chemistry and aerosol research, ranging from development and application of trajectory, regional and global chemistry models, assimilation, analysis of airborne and satellite data, and study of chemistry-climate interactions. It is also part of IPSL. LATMOS was a partner in the YAK GDRE and actively involved in obtaining funds for flight missions notably as part of the French POLARCAT project coordinated by LATMOS at national and international level as an IPY activity. LATMOS has contributed to joint analyses of the YAK data including analysis of airmass/source origins, validation and assimilation in LMDz-INCA of IASI satellite CO and evaluation of global models (LMDz-INCA/IPSL, MOZART-NCAR, TOMCAT-Leeds). LATMOS will continue to contribute to YAK through potential instrument developments (e.g. aerosol micro-lidar) and data analysis investigating transport of pollutants on seasonal and inter-annual timescales.
